Best Rap Songs of December 2017 (Latest Releases)

Each month I scour the internet to find new rap songs for listening in my spare time.  Rap is one of the only genres of music I’ve always enjoyed.  Although I enjoy other genres too (electronic, oldies, classic rock, 90s, and many current songs) – I don’t even attempt to keep up with current music releases; there are too many.  Trying to keep up with all of the new music in the world would drive me absolutely bananas.

For this reason, I stick with what I’ve always liked: rap.  I do my best to stay fairly current with the latest rap releases in my free time.  That said, even attempting to keep up with just rap releases is a daunting task.  There are more rap artists and innovative styles than ever before – it’s a very competitive niche, and in my opinion (though many will disagree), there’s a greater amount of “catchy” rap music being released on a daily basis than ever before – this trend will likely continue as the human population increases; more people = more releases = more competition.

King Los: Moor Bars (sans pineal calcification)

In terms of personal rap song preferences, I appreciate: catchy melodies, catchy choruses, quality vocals, creativity, and lyricism.  However, I like the entire package of the aforementioned characteristics: it needs to have some balance.  Anyways, I’m not going to write an essay describing my preferences or the current status of rap music, nor am I going to defend my personal preference for rap music.

If you don’t like rap – you can safely ignore this article.  Moreover, even if you’re a rap aficionado, I don’t expect you to enjoy every single song I’ve listed in my monthly roundup.  Because I enjoy many types of rap, I won’t allow myself to be pigeonholed into liking one particular style for the sake of public perception (e.g. lyrical, non-lyrical, mainstream, underground, etc.) – this is reflected in my selections.

Top Rap Songs of December 2017

I’ve compiled my favorite rap songs for the month of December and listed them below.  This should save you some time if you’re looking for new rap songs and/or want a monthly playlist for the whip.  Each month I generally compile a large list of my favorite tracks and share them with a few people.  Because I’ve been doing this for months, I figured I’d also post my selections on this blog in case any readers were interested.

Joyner Lucas: Bank Account Remix (Cover)

Keep in mind that I include all types of artists in these monthly roundups – and no I don’t want to be introduced to more via email (aspiring artists: please refrain from sending me your latest mixtape).  It is my hope that, by making these lists, you might discover some new artists and/or rap songs that you enjoy (if you like rap).  Lastly, when creating this list, I attempted to solely include songs that were released in December 2017.  (That said, some songs included were released just prior to December. Oh, and I’m not going to rank-order the songs on the list – whether one is superior to another is a subjective and futile debate).

Final note: I realize there were many songs that dropped in December 2017 that were popular within the rap community, but that were not included on the above list.  If I didn’t post a song and it was fairly popular, I probably didn’t really enjoy it much.  For example, I didn’t really like the Eminem and Ed Sheeran collab.

During December 2017 I also discovered some songs that I thought were fire – but old.  An example of such a song is “Stick Up” by Armani White… apparently was released over 2 years ago… never heard it until this past month… crazy.  There were a few others, but this was easily the “newly-discovered but old track” of the month for me.  Perhaps in the future I’ll make a roundup list of newly-discovered but old tracks that I liked.

Anyways, I’m not going to make many comments about the tracks above – you can check them out and assess for yourself whether you enjoy.  I will mention that, if forced to pick my favorite jams of the entire bunch, I’d take the remixes by Joyner Lucas.  Although Joyner has released some great original music, in my opinion, he’s even better when remixing (more like assassinating) popular instrumentals – I hope he continues this trend throughout 2018.

Also thought that “5K Freestyle” by ZOTiYAC was flames, Uzi Vert continued to impress, Cdot Honcho is an acquired taste (fire), the Action Bronson was vintage on Harry Fraud’s project, and Ace Hood’s tracks were way overlooked.  Next, “Space Cadet” by Kollision was some “new wave” smoothness.  Finally, although Joyner’s “Bank Account” went hardest (wasn’t even close), Lil Wayne’s “WeezyMix” and of this song was surprisingly legit.

Albums/mixtapes worth a listen (December 2017)

  • JayDaYoungan: Wake Up
  • King Los: G.O.A.T.
  • King Los: Moor Bars
  • Lil Baby: Too Hard
  • Lil Wayne: Dedication 6
  • Quavo & Travis Scott: Huncho Jack
  • Quality Control: Control The Streets (Vol. 1)

What were your favorite rap songs that dropped in December 2017?

If you’re a fellow rap aficionado, I’d love to hear what your favorite rap songs were that dropped in (or just prior to) the month of December 2017.  Because I don’t spend all day tracking the latest releases, I’m sure there were some quality jams that I may have either: completely missed (never saw) or overlooked.  Feel free to share any additional tracks that dropped during December 2017 that you think I’d like – in the comments section.

If you’re using the above list to discover new music and/or update existing rap playlists:

  • Which songs were your favorites on the December 2017 list?
  • Were there any artists mentioned above that you never heard of, but that you will now start following?

I’ll continue posting up my favorite rap songs at the end of each month – so you’ll have to wait for the end of January for my recap of the next month’s hottest songs.  (Hopefully this December 2017 list will tide you over until then).
